More of a US hit, the Colecovision was the main rival to Atari's system in the late 1970's, and had a rather short lifespan of about 2 or 3 years. Nevertheless, as the only real alternative to the Atari consoles, the Colecovision still sold well over a million units.
They are popular with retro gamers, as they often have excellent conversion of arcade games. Games such as Donkey Kong, Mr. Do and Mouse Trap were arcade perfect, compared to the blocky sprites that the 2600 offered, so for arcade hounds it was the ideal console to replicate the games at home. However, for the more unfamiliar game player, it wasn't particularly desirable, it's back catalogue was small compared to Atari's 2600, and it was the first casualty of the Video Game Crash in 1983.
