Nintendo 64 Consoles & Video Games
Originally dubbed the Ultra 64, the rather unoriginally named Nintendo 64 touched down in Japan and the US in 1996 after a number of complicated delays. It would soon be host to some of gaming's greatest ever titles.
At the time of its release, the Nintendo 64 was technically the most technologically advanced of all the consoles on the market, but some fatal design flaws limited just how much it was capable of.
CD-ROMs (which could store hundreds of MBs of data) were already widely accepted as standard in PCs, the Saturn, and PlayStation, but the Nintendo 64 bravely choose to stick to the cartridge format. As well as being expensive to manufacture, their limited storage capacity really held back the machine's graphical capabilities.
Despite these limitations, the Nintendo 64 has been home to some of the most critically acclaimed video game classics of all time, many of which are considered amongst the best games ever mad - Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and GoldenEye 007, to name but a few. The Nintendo 64 was never as popular amongst consumers as Sony's legendary PlayStation console, but as far as the pure quality of its games are concerned, many will argue that Nintendo's machine was the real champion of its generation.
