After the huge success of the Mega Drive, Sega attempted to grab the next generation of video gamers with the Sega Saturn console. Although it would be home to some genuine classics, a number of poor decisions would see the Saturn console left in the dust.
Released in 1994 in Japan, and 1995 in North America and Europe, the Sega would be a popular enough machine in its home country, lasting a generous 5 five years, but in the west, the mighty shadow cast by Sony's PlayStation console was a barrier Sega was never able to beat.
Mind you, it wasn't all Sony's fault. One of the biggest contributing factors to the Saturn's lack of success is considered to be the complete lack of a certain popular mascot on the console, a mascot who had help define the previous generation of consoles. That's right... Sonic the Hedgehog.
Still, despite the general lack of the spikey one, the Saturn has been home to some genuine classics. Of it's games library, NiGHTS into Dreams, Panzer Dragoon Saga and Burning Rangers are commonly cited Saturn classics, and are fondly remembered to this day.
The Saturn may have been underappreciated it, but those who owned one will always admit to you... it was worth every penny.
